Chapter 26

Ellyn

The fall is objectively short, but that moment before we hit the ground feels like an eternity. And the landing is a thousand times worse. Someone may as well have doused me with a bucket of ice water, bringing my sensibility rushing back in. What in hells came over me?

Ash and I slipped from each other’s hold as we tumbled, but my name is the first word from his lips once we hit the ground. “Ellyn!” His hands find me in the dark.

“What’s happened?” The darkness here is as encompassing as it is in the caves we’ve shared and the scent of earth is now familiar in my nose.

“Seems we chose the wrong tree to lean against. There was a trap door.”

“A trap door?” I gasp. Who would put a trap door out in the middle of nowhere…and perhaps more importantly, where are they now? “Can you see anything?”

“No, it’s too dark—even for me. I’ll get a light going.” I feel Ash’s presence move about in the darkness, searching for the pack.

The moments since our madness tick by and with each one I become increasingly shocked by what transpired between us. Ash is a beast. A handsome one, yes, with a nature that’s both easy-going and intoxicatingly intense, but until this point he’s hardly been more than a tentative ally. I shouldn’t have encouraged anything physical between us—yet undeniably, I drew him in this direction. And look where it got us. I try to do just that, but still, I can’t see a thing in all this darkness.

“Are you hurt at all?” he questions.

I nearly mention the soreness in my ass, but I can just imagine him bending me over and doing something delicious to soothe my aches and pains, so I bite my tongue instead. “I’ll live. What about you?”

“Don’t you worry about me, boss,” he says, and finally I hear him strike his flint. A spark illuminates the room and then fades away. I hear Ash blowing and the fungus bulb begins a dull glow. It’s hardly enough light to allow me to make sense of the room, but I can tell Ash rises to his feet and begins to study our surroundings. His boots scrape against the packed earth floor and I can hear his hands skating over the walls.

“What in hells…” he mutters. He makes his way around the room, until he’s behind me. Despite our current predicament, I can’t help but think about what just happened. Would I have made love to Ash if we hadn’t been interrupted by this new trap? I nearly groan, knowing what the answer to that question is.

While I’m no virgin, my trysts have been few and far between and never, never have they been as charged as they were in those few moments with Ash. I’m mentally trying to blame it all on the emotional circumstances of the evening, when I feel Ash approach from behind. I let out a sigh as one of his hands curls around my waist.
